CIAC sets official football playoff pairings
What was unofficial by the numbers has become official by committee on Friday, and the CIAC football playoff pairings are set.
The committee made no changes to the pairings that became apparent by the end of Thursday morning’s games that ended the regular season. The 32 teams who appeared to be in are all in. They’ll all play quarterfinal games in four classes on Tuesday night at 6:30.
New Canaan’s win over Darien moved the Rams up to the fourth seed in Class L. They will host Wethersfield in the quarterfinals.
Darien, which could have been the top seed in Class LL with a win, is instead the third seed, getting a rematch with sixth-seeded and defending champion Greenwich. The Blue Wave beat Greenwich 27-21 on Oct. 26 in their regular-season meeting, which came down to the final seconds.
Newtown is Class LL’s top seed, drawing NFA. Second-seeded Southington, which beat Cheshire in double overtime on Thursday, will meet Ridgefield; fifth-seeded Cheshire goes to Simsbury.
In Class L, Wilton, in the playoffs for the first time since 1995, will face top-seeded FCIAC rival St. Joseph in a game to be played at Trumbull, with the winner drawing the New Canaan-Wethersfield winner and possibly facing the Rams again. Second-seeded Hand hosts seventh-seeded Newington at the Surf Club. The third seed, Maloney, gets sixth-seeded Berlin at Falcon Field in Meriden.
By a tiebreaker in Class M, Abbott Tech/Immaculate took the fourth seed over Weston and will host the Trojans at Brookfield. New Fairfield, the sixth seed, will visit third-seeded Killingly. Top-seeded Rockville hosts the SMSA co-op. Waterford, the second seed, draws Granby/Canton.
In Class S, top-seeded Ansonia hosts the eighth seed, Plainfield at Nolan Field. Hearst Connecticut Media’s Michael P. Mayko reported that Ansonia and Derby town officials have agreed that the game can move to Derby’s Ryan Field if this weekend’s weather makes that necessary.
Bullard-Havens, the second seed, hosts seventh-seeded Plainville at Kennedy Stadium in Bridgeport. Fifth-seeded Woodland will visit Sheehan, the fourth seed. And third-seeded Bloomfield hosts the sixth-seeded Stafford co-op.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. They’re available for advance purchase at CIACSports.com.
All semifinal games are Sunday, Dec. 8, at the higher seed at 12:30 p.m. The championship games are Saturday, Dec. 14, two at Veterans Stadium in New Britain, two at Trumbull’s Jerry McDougall Stadium, though which games go where is to be determined.
