Spartans fall short in state tournament quest
A month ago, the Shepaug Valley High baseball team routed Gilbert 12-1 at Walker Field in Winsted to extend its win streak to four games.
At 6-7 and seemingly on their game, the Spartans appeared posed to make a run for a solid seed in the state Class S tournament.
Unfortunately, fortunes turned suddenly on coach Scott Werkhoven's Region 12 diamond nine.
A 9-0 whitewashing by host Thomaston three days later precipitated a seven-game skid that closed the books recently on a 6-14 Spartan campaign, two wins shy of state qualification.
"They are a good group of kids to work with, and we appreciate their contributions to Shepaug baseball, and wish them the best in the future," said Werkoven.
"After a good stretch in the middle of the season, the end of the season was a disappointing way to finish," he said.
Greg Alex and Wes Meeker earned Berkshire second team laurels.
The history of Shepaug baseball is rich, and coach Werkhoven is hopeful the Spartans can soon return to their traditional winning ways.
"We are looking forward to bringing a good group back next year," said the Region 12 bench boss. "Some who played varsity, and others who will get a chance to contribute next year.
"How hard this group works and how much they improve between now and the beginning of next season will go a long way in determining how much improvement we will make."
