Every once in a while, everything comes together for a high school sports team.

That once in a while arrived this spring for Shepaug Valley High School golf.

The Spartans had harbored expectations for a solid season in the Berkshire League, in large part because senior Mia Landegren returned for a fourth campaign as the league's best player.

Coach Al Ciarlo's Region 12 links crew also boasted a couple of promising young talents in Griffin Ylagan and Rob McCarhty to complement their undisputed ace and her fellow seniors, Spencer Ylagan and Josh Thermer.

However, even the irrepressible Ciarlo didn't expect his charges to post a 14-2 record in Berkshire League competition, with both setbacks to undefeated champ Lewis Mills.

A regular season-ending win, 167-171, over neighboring New Milford High at Lake Waramaug Country Club on May 20 added sweet icing to an overall 15-4 spring.

The University of Alabama-bound Landegren had been the anchor the past couple of years for an otherwise inexperienced squad.

Yet this spring, even as she missed some matches due to her international competition, the Spartans flourished.

McCarthy showed flashes of excellence, and the Ylagan brothers and Thermer contributed a steady diet of low 40s nine-hole scores to grind out win after win.

Andrew Loya and Jack Mullen also lent their skills to the cause, as Shepaug quickly ascended the league standings.

Following the regular season, the Spartans participated without Landegren in the May 28 Berkshire League tournament at Fairview Farm in Harwinton.

Spencer Ylgan led the Region 12 golfers with his 11-over-par 83 and was followed by Griffin Ylagan (84), McCarthy (91) and Thermer (93).

The Spartans capped their 2013 season by combining at Crestbrook Park in Watertown for a four-man, 18-hole total of 353 in the state Division IV tournament.

That effort was good for 12th place in a 20-team field.

Seeason's end marked the close of the Spartan gof careers of Landegren, Thermer and Spencer.
