The fall of 2013 will likely be well remembered by members of the Shepaug Valley High girls soccer side.

The Spartans outplayed perennial powers Nonnewaug and Litchfield and closed their campaign recently with competition in the state Class S tournament.

A 3-0 defeat to Class S rival Coventry closed the books on the girls' season with a 9-9 record.

"We accomplished a lot this season," said coach Tara Flaherty.

"We were plagued with injuries, but for a young team, the girls really stepped up," she said.

For their season-long efforts, Sarah Stratton and Caroline Kelly were honored as Berkshire League all-stars and Margot Wilhelm was accorded second-team laurels.

Samantha Moravsky and Allison Drzal earned honorable mention.

"I couldn't be happier with the attitude of the girls in each and every game," Flaherty said.

"They always gave their best."

The season's end brought with it the end of the Spartan soccer careers of seniors Allison Drzal, Tia Martino, Summer Mercier, Bria Noone, Kim Valentine and Taylor Weston.

Flaherty is hopeful that in the fall of 2014, the Spartans will surpass this year's performance.

"As always, we strive to compete at a higher level each and every season," she said, "and the girls did not disappoint.

"We are already looking forward to an even more competitive season next year."
