Fellow seniors Michael Korniewicz and Kellen Rikhoff highlighted a strong season for Shepaug Valley High boys' tennis recently by winning the Berkshire League doubles title.

The Korniewicz/Rikhoff tandem had cruised through their regular-season schedule to earn the Berkshire League top seed.

The Spartan duo then dispatched league rivals May 18 at Hotchkiss School in Lakeville to capture Berkshire League doubles laurels and earn Berkshire League all-star honors.

Their performance came on top of a strong regular season for coach David Bilmes' court crew.

The Spartans carved out a 16-3 record, including none-league wins over Brookfield, 6-1; Abbott Tech, 4-3; and New Fairfield, 5-2.

In the league, the Region 12 racquet squad lost only a pair of 3-2 decisions to Berkshire champ Lewis Mills and a 3-1 late-season verdict to Housatonic Valley.

Overall, the Spartans posted a 76-27 record for all singles and doubles matches during the regular season.

Bilmes and company took their act to the state tournament, for which singles players Jack Brotherton and Ellery Rourke earned a No. 2 seed in doubles competition, but their CIAC experience was brief.

For the season, Kellen Rikhoff was 18-0 overall, while Michale Korniewicz was 20-3, Greg Valentine was 18-3, Kirby Peters was 16-5, Jack Brotherton 14-8, Richie Wilhelm was 12-3, Ellery Rourke was 9-10 and Anthony Amato was 5-5.

Playing their final tennis for the Spartans this spring were seniors Jack Brotherton, Ellery Rourk, Michael Korniewicz, Kirby Peters, Greg Valentine, Richie Wilhelm and Kellen Rikhoff.
