South Kent School will welcome the Selects Hockey Academy (SHA) U-16 team this weekend for the inaugural Legacy Elite Hockey Invitational.

Matches will be played Friday through Sunday, Jan. 18-20, featuring some of the top midget programs in the country, including Belle Tire from Detroit, Mich.

"We are excited to attract some of the best teams and young talent in the country to our South Kent School campus," said Devin Rask, head coach of the Selects Academy U-16 team.

"The event will be very attractive to college coaches and scouts," he said, "as they will see top players from around the country at one location as well as make for exciting hockey for all to enjoy."

In addition to the host Selects Academy U-16 team, the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Junior Knights, Belle Tire, New Jersey Rockets, North Jersey Avalanche and the Connecticut Oilers will compete here.

The local U-16 team is turning heads around the country. The team continues to gain national attention with its wins and strong showings in major competitions.

Several players have received attention from the top NCAA schools, including six Division I commitments and five players drafted into the United States Hockey League (USHL) and one into the Quebec Major Junior League (QMJL).

The inaugural season of Selects Academy at South Kent School began in 2011-12 with the U-16 team followed by an expanded program offering teams for U-18 and U-14 this winter.

Each of the three teams play a 50- to 60-game schedule.

The U-16 and U-18 teams are also eligible to compete for their respective USA Hockey Tier I national championships.
