Softball umpires hit the big time
A quintet of Greater New Milford-area softball umpires are keeping a busy agenda both near and far this summer.
Sixteen umpires from Connecticut have been selected by the Amateur Softball Association to showcase their skills in national tournaments, and among them are Jason Maxwell, Joe Moker, Charlie Hicks and Steve Kolitz of New Milford, as well as Richie Abramson of Brookfield.
Mr. Maxwell, Mr. Moker and Mr. Kolitz will be in Stratford for the Aug. 1-5 10/12U class `B' national championships.
During that same period, Mr. Abramson will be traveling to Sterling, Va. for the 16U and 18U gold nationals.
Mr. Hicks will travel in late September to Oklahoma City for the Special Olympics' national games.
"All of us are excited to be going and representing ourselves, our boards and our communities," said Mr. Kolitz, "as well as the local leagues we umpire each year."
Each of the umpires cover their own expenses for these various trips, Mr. Kolitz explained.
Those who would like to support the program and the umpires' travels, call Mr. Kolitz at 203-417-9670 or email email@example.com.
Checks may be sent to 33 Perry Drive, New Milford, CT 06776. The funds collected will be divided proportionately.
"We all thank you for your past. present and future support," said Mr. Kolitz, "as we work games in Bethel, New Milford, Danbury, Newtown, Redding, Washington, Sherman, Wilton and other towns."
