The fifth annual Spartan Invitational coed track & field meet will be held Saturday, May 10 starting at 10 a.m. at Shepaug Valley High School in Washington.

The host Spartans will be joined by athletes from neighboring Nonnewaug, Holy Cross of Waterbury and Hampden Charter School of Science from Massachusetts, as well as possibly other schools.

The event is being organized by Shepaug senior Hannah Redstone as her senior project.

"I'm hoping this year we will be able to be more successful than past years," said Hannah, "to make money to go to the track team so we can get new equipment."

"That will benefit the team," she added, "and only help us improve."

Each Shepaug senior is required to complete a project.

"I chose this project because I wanted to pick something that I was involved in," Hannah said, "and that would keep my interest and me busy all year and this project was perfect."

"There hasn't been one day when I wasn't thinking of ways to change the invitational," she said, "and make it more enjoyable for everyone, even spectators."

A variety of foods, including breakfast food types, will be served, along with the traditional hotdogs and hamburgers.

"I also plan on having a more healthier food selection for runners," Hannah remarked, "such as fruit and sandwiches."

She also noted the T-shirt design has been updated for 2014.

"I hope this year the invitational will have a good turnout," Hannah concluded, "and be enjoyable to all."
