Eight times the Schaghticoke Middle School boys' basketball team tipped off against area rivals this winter.

And eight times the New Milford youths played their way to victory.

Their performance achieved the SMS boys' first perfect basketball campaign during the seven years since the sport was reinstated as an interscholastic program.

"Congratulations to the 2013-2014 SMS boys' basketball team to go undefeated in the middle school league, which consists of many teams they will face again as high school athletes," said coach David Mumma.

"They worked hard each day to improve," said their veteran coach, "and fell into their roles without hesitation to give whatever support they could to the team."

Contributing to the cause were Matt Brevard, Chris Gesualdi, Charlie Osborne, Alec Lubas, Tyler Sullivan, Anthony Trocchio, Austin Swanson, Jimmy Lewis, Hunter Skelly, Eric Habjan, Sean Murphy and Nick Scarcella.

Coach Mumma was most pleased his squad, from stem to stern, played as one.

"From being a star, all the way to keeping the statistics," he remarked, "the boys performed the jobs that they were given with enthusiasm and maturity"
