Roxbury runners to give grants
Grants to six area high school cross country/track and field programs will be given in 2012 for a 13th straight year by the Roxbury road race series.
Runners in the 35-year-old weekly series sent letters to principals and athletic directors at New Milford, Shepaug Valley, Nonnewaug, Brookfield, Pomperaug and Oxford high schools asking what they would do with $600, or some portion of that sum, to improve their cross country/track and field programs.
The money is raised through contributions to the runners' T-shirt/grants campaign. The grants will be announced at May 5's 22nd annual Larry Kershnar 4.3-mile race, one of the featured events in the series. The event is named for the second director of the series, Dr. Larry Kershnar, who served in the position from 1980 to 1985.
