Roxbury race series to offer high school grants
The Roxbury road race series will offer collectively at least $600 in grants to area high schools for their respective cross country and/or track and field programs.
Letters were sent in October to the athletic directors at New Milford, Shepaug Valley, Pomperaug, Oxford, Brookfield and Nonnewaug high schools asking for proposals on what they would do with grant money or some portion of it to improve their programs.
The deadline for applications is March 31.
A committee of runners from the weekly series will make its selection(s). The recipients will be announced May 2 following the series' annual Larry Kershnar 4.3-mile MidSpring Challenge race.
New Milford High School received $600 in a grant in 2014.
Since 2000, the runners have provided more than $8,000 in grants.
The money is raised as part of a campaign, also including the purchase of T-shirts for participants in the 40-race series.
