Roxbury Road Race Series still running strong in 35th season

ROXBURY -- The 35th season of the Roxbury Road Race Series will start on Feb. 19, at 8:30 a.m. with a 2.4-mile race.

There will be a race every Saturday through Dec. 3, except for July 30, when the 44th annual New Milford 7.8-mile run will be held in conjunction with Village Fair Days.

The eighth annual Roxbury Marathon will be held on Dec. 10, at 8:30 a.m. The Roxbury Half Marathon will be held on Nov. 12, at 8:30 a.m.

The series also will feature the Larry Kershnar Mid-Spring Challenge, which will be held over a 4.3-mile course on Apr. 30. The race is named after a former director of the series.

The Bill Burley Mid-Summer Championship will be held on July 16 over a 5.0-mile course. That event is named after the founding head director of the series.

The Bob Lewis Mid-Autumn Championship will be held on Nov. 5 over a 3.95-mile course. That race is named after the current head director, who has held that position since 1986.

The Two For A Show race will be held Sept. 10 over a 3.1-mile course to benefit a charity and the Ed Sandifer race, named after an 11-time season champion, is scheduled for Sept. 24.

All of the races are free, except for the special events, where there will be a $5 entry fee.

The entry fees for the Roxbury Marathon and Half Marathon will be determined in the near future.

The series also will be a co-sponsor for the 11th annual Run For A Cure 3-mile race on Nov. 24, which starts and finishes near the Roxbury Congregational Church. There will be a $10 entry fee for that race, which benefits the cancer centers at the New Milford and Danbury hospitals and the Relay For Life, which is a component of the American Cancer Society.

The races, which are sanctioned by the Roxbury Recreation Commission, start and finish near the Everett Hurlburt Community Park on West Apple Lane.

There is a point system and the top runners in the season standings will be awarded plaques after the Dec. 3 race.
