The best bet for a daily double finish during the 2012 Roxbury road race series might have been Jeff Sheldon of Southbury and hometown athlete Theresa Krebs.

The 2013 season kicked off last Saturday in Roxbury and that same duo rose to the occasion with respective men's and women's victories.

In a field of 80 finishers, Sheldon, 32, easily annexed overall honors with a 13:57 clocking over a rolling 2.4-mile layout which featured an arduous climb on Chalybes Road.

Stosh Davis, 15, a member of New Milford High School's state open championship boys' cross country team, was second in 14:32.

Krebs, 43, captured women's laurels with her 14th-place time of 16:52.

Noteworthy was the turnout of 81 runners, counting an alternate course, for the debut event of the series' 37th season.

Bill Burley, a former Roxbury resident who served as an elementary school principal in New Milford for many years, started the races as an eight-week summer series in 1977.

The series will resume Saturday, March 2 at 8:30 a.m. with a 3.1-mile run taking the field to the bottom of Hemlock Road and back.

There will be no entry fee.

The races are sanctioned by the Roxbury Recreation Commission. Most events start and finish near Hurlburt Community Park on West Apple Lane.
