Dreams of South-West Conference championships and state tournament glory are all well and good, in their time.

For the moment, coach Erica Craft and her New Milford High School volleyball team have in front of them the very real and attainable goal of qualifying for the state tournament this autumn.

"This team, I believe, has the skill level to make it to states," said coach Craft this week, "so we hope to come on strong and get our record to 6-5, instead of 3-5."

The Green Wave bid to take a step in that direction Wednesday when it hosted Oxford at NMHS.

Coach Craft and Co. are also set today (Friday) to visit Kolbe Cathedral in Bridgeport.

Home dates Saturday with non-SWC rival Northwestern and Monday vs. Bunnell will closely follow for the busy Green Wave.

"Then when we are going against the stronger teams we meet up with in the end of our season, like Joel Barlow and Newtown," said coach Craft, "we will have the confidence that needs to be there to go for it, and win."

Most recently, the NMHS court set outplayed visiting Notre Dame last Friday (see photos).

If the players take the cue of their first-year coach, they'll be fine in coming weeks.

"These girls have what it takes," coach Craft remarked this week.
