Green Wave golfers make their mark on the links

It's been many years since the New Milford High golf team has captured a league championship.

Longtime coach Jon Anderson guided talented Green Wave squads to titles in the 1970s and '80s in the old Western Connecticut Conference.

Yet it has been more than a quarter-century since NMHS tasted links glory.

That said, 12th-year coach Jim Mullin has a habit of producing quality teams each spring, and this season was no exception.

Coming off an 11-4-1 campaign in 2013, the Green Wave carved out a 9-3 South-West Conference record this spring, the fourth best ledger in one of the state's strongest golf leagues.

Seniors Cole Case and Tyler Lanza played key roles for the Green Wave, as did sophomores John Pace, Kyle Poeti and Steve Santos.

In tournament play, the Cole Case/Kyle Poeti tandem carded a three-over-par 38 for nine holes to earn sixth place among 14 two-man teams in the SWC's annnual Coaches' Cup event at Rock Ridge Country Club in Newtown.

Steve Santos forged an 89 over the challenging Ridgewood Country Club layout in Danbury to lead his team in the SWC tournament.

Lending their support were Cole Case (91), Tyler Lanza (91), Kyle Poeti (99) and John Pace (99) as coach Mullin's squad finished fifth of eight teams.

The Green Wave capped its 2014 season with a 20th-place performance in the state Division I tournament.

Kyle Poeti (83), Tyler Lanza (87), Cole Case (89), John Pace (97) and Steve Santos (100) represented NMHS.

Season's end marked the close of the Green Wave golf careers of seniors Cole Case, Gabriel Hack, Tyler Lanza, Maddox Niebauer, Tyler Poeti and Alex Symon.
