Looking for a perennial contender for South-West Conference honors in girls' soccer?

One need look no farther than New Milford High School.

For the second time in four seasons, the Green Wave's distaff booters claimed the SWC title Oct. 29 with a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Masuk of Monroe.

Add to those efforts, coach Greg LaCava's NMHS side dropped last year's championship match in double overtime.

Since that heartbreaking defeat last October, the Green Wave had this year's title date already circled on its calendar.

The anticipation was worth it.

Rachel Weir and Jenna Barron each scored a second-half goal to lift the third-seeded Green Wave to the title.

Goalkeeper Colleen Lynch made four saves, including a couple of huge stops in the second half, to preserve the victory.

"We're so happy because, the entire season, we were waiting for this," Barron said. "We've been working up for it. It was our goal, and now we finally reached it, so I'm proud of everyone."

LaCava enjoys the perspective of his three years at the helm, as well as his experience assisting head coach Greg Marsan to that 2011 title.

"It's a great feeling," he said. "Last year, to come here and be so close and lose the way we did in the second overtime, I was happy to be back here and wanted to take it one step further.

"I thought we played very well for 80 minutes tonight," he said. "I was very impressed."

Down 1-0, playoff MVP Rachel Weir tied the match for the Green Wave in the 51st minute, finessing a high shot from 20 yards out off a centering pass from Monica Baxter.

Five minutes later, the Masuk goalkeeper made a diving stop on a blistering shot by New Milford freshman Sarah Marsan from 20 yards out to keep the game tied.

Jenna Barron broke the tie for good in the 71st minute. Elizabeth Swanson deflected the ball forward to Jenna, who suddenly found herself in front of the goal with space to shoot -- and she didn't miss, booting a low shot inside the far post.

"I shot it with my left foot, and it went right in," Barron said.

The SWC championship performance lifted the Green Wave's overall record to 13-4-4 as it headed off this week into state class LL tournament competition.
