A berth in the state tournament is still in the cards for the New Milford High School volleyball squad.

For a program that last season struggled to a 3-15 record, that news is positive indeed.

Coach Tony Nocera's Green Wave owned a 6-10 record early this week following a 3-0 defeat to Pomperaug in Southbury.

The girls would need to win two of their remaining four matches to qualify for the postseason competition.

They'll finish Friday, Oct. 25, at home against non-league foe Northwestern, which they beat 3-2 in September.

Leading up to that closing match, however, are tough South-West Conference dates Friday, Oct. 18, at home against unbeaten Joel Barlow, Monday, Oct. 21, at home against Bethel and Wednesday, Oct. 23 at Masuk in Monroe.

In other words, the Green Wave would need an upset or two to get an invitation to the tournament party.

That said, regardless of the final ledger, for a squad featuring just three seniors -- Macie Leheny, Emily Llerena and Becca Nusser -- this autumn has proven an upbeat experience for Nocera and his squad.
