NEW MILFORD — Only four performances at the SWC gymnastics championships received a score of 9.0 or higher — and all four belonged to New Milford.

The Green Wave’s Mikayla Dumas was the All-Around Champion after capturing the vault, bars and floor with scores of 9.30, 9.00 and 9.00, respectively.

Her teammate, Angela Lian, brought home the beam title after scoring a 9.05 and finished third overall in the All-Around.

It should come as no surprise then that the Green Wave claimed their third consecutive SWC title.

“I feel great,” Lian said. “I knew we were going to win. We were really good this season.”

New Milford amassed 134.35 points, besting the rest of the six-team field that included runner-up Newtown (128.10), Pomperaug (127.65), Barlow (126.00), Oxford (114.70) and Nonnewaug (27.00).

Dumas’ 36.10 total score was comfortably in front of Oxford’s Emily Baktis, who was the runner-up with 33.75 points. Baktis claimed second on the bars.

“It feels great,” Dumas said. “We really wanted to win for the third time in a row.”

After finishing second in the All-Around in last year’s SWC Championship meet, Dumas had her sights set on claiming the title this year as well as keeping her team perched on top of the conference.

The sophomore was mobbed by her teammates after sticking the landing on her bar routine.

“I was really excited and happy,” Dumas said. “They’re great teammates. I was so happy. I wanted (the All-Around) since last year.”

Lian surprised herself a bit by bringing home the beam championship.

“I was not expecting that at all actually,” Lian said. “I was really nervous going in. My warmup was really bad because I was falling on my round-off, but I just totally stuck it. I don’t know how, but I did.”

Other key contributors for the Green Wave were Brianna Hatzmann (tied for ninth), Caitlyn Chemero (21st), Anna Santarelli (25th) and Ashley Jennings (26th).

New Milford has only one senior on the roster, so unseating the Green Wave at the top of the SWC might be quite the daunting task.

“I have one senior and two juniors,” New Milford coach Bethany Mihaly said. “I’m very, very proud of where they’ve come from and where they’re going “My girls are still holding up there. They’re all babies. I graduated two really good seniors last year.”
