The 12th annual World Affairs Forum will take place April 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Shepaug Valley High School in Washington.

The guest speaker will be Willard (Bill) C. Hass, the president of the United Nations Association's Southwestern Connecticut Chapter.

He also is the vice president of the U Thant Institute, a nonprofit organization with the mission of promoting the spirit of international tolerance and brotherhood reflected in the vision of former United Nations Secretary-General U Thant.

For more than 31 years, Hass served the United Nations Secretariat in a variety of ways, mostly related to media functions.

He most recently worked as the senior editor in the United Nations Press Service, managing the writing, editing and production of press releases issued by U.N. headquarters in both New York and conferences overseas.

Hass and eight Shepaug Valley High student panelists will engage the audience in a two-hour discussion about "What should the U.S. and the U.N. do to ensure civilian safety in areas of conflict?"

"Please join us in the Shepaug library to share your thoughts about such pivotal issues in our global society," said Shepaug student Zoe Heimbrock, who is organizing the event as part of her senior project.
