The Gunnery, a private school in Washington, has received the largest gift in its history, $7 million from the Tisch family.
The gift comes from Joan H. Tisch, widow of the late Preston Robert Tisch, and sons Steve E. Tisch and Jonathan M. Tisch, Gunnery Class of 1967 and 1972, respectively.
The donation reflects a continuation of the family's longtime support of the school, which began when Jonathan and Steve were students at The Gunnery.
The Tisch Library was dedicated in 1975. In 1990, the Tisch Chair for Excellence in Teaching was established. Since then, such capital projects as the Emerson Performing Arts Center and Teddy House Dormitory have benefited from the family's support.
The gift will be used to expand and renovate the school's core academic building, currently called The Schoolhouse, and enhance the Tisch Library, its centerpiece.
In recognition of the gift, the school will rename the building to The Tisch Academic Center. A portion of the gift will be added to the endowment to support the academic program.
