The Kent Memorial Library will host a series, "The Supreme Court in American Life."

An essay competition open only to Housatonic Valley Regional School students will be held in conjunction.

Cash prizes will be awarded in two categories: a $100 prize for ninth- and tenth-grade students and a $500 prize for eleventh- and twelfth-grade students.

In a formally developed essay of 500 words, each applicant will consider how the United States Supreme Court has affected his or her life.

In preparing to compose the essay, applicants are asked to consider the role the court has played in all aspects of American life, including civil rights, education, privacy and free speech.

Essayists are encouraged to work with their social studies and English teachers when developing and editing this composition.

The final draft must be submitted by March 1 to the applicant's social studies or English teacher.

Winners will be announced May 15 and prizes will be awarded June 6.
