'Animated' NMHS grads party 'til dawn

The halls of New Milford High School became a veritable cartoon kingdom last weekend for the Class of 2014's Grad Party.

More than 300 of the 355 young men and women who'd earned a diploma earlier Saturday closed the book on their high school careers by frolicking until well into the Sunday morning hours at NMHS.

The event's theme was cartoons. The walls were covered with images of many of the animated characters the teens had grown so accustomed to seeing on Nickelodeon and other cartoon networks, and many of the activities, such as Scooby Do racing, were reminders of those lovable reminders of youth.

The graduates were chaperoned by parents and other volunteers in the same building they'd spent much of their past four years.

The event, which started about 9:30 p.m. and lasted until 5 a.m., extended a two-decade NMHS tradition maintained by a volunteer committee and supported by community sponsors.

After returning from their early-evening commencement ceremony at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, the grads indulged in raffles, food, games, memorabilia, door prizes and especially the camaraderie of their fellow grads.

Charismatic hypnotist Dan LaRosa helped bring the all-night festivities to a close with his memorable 75-minute performance, finally calling it a night at about 4:30 a.m.
