'Thanks' offered for help with Don Gowan basketball court

To the Editor:

We wish to thank all those who contributed their time and resources to the building of the Don Gowan Memorial Court at Kent Center School (KCS).

The facility is named for Bridgewater native Don Gowan, who died in 2008. He had served as a teacher, coach and administrator for many years at Kent School and also was a contributor to community recreational activities.

The court is open to Center School students and Kent residents. Summer leagues and camps are being planned for 2010.

Of special note, a $30,000 donation from KCS grad and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane allowed construction to be completed sooner than anticipated.

Among those who helped are:

Bill Gawel of Gawel Excavation; Jason Dubray of Dubray's Construction & Maintenance; Bill McCann of Haymore Services; John Gleason of Gleason Electric; Scott Palmer, Ed Pequignot, Mark Lenz and Aaron Pequignot of Pequignot Enterprises; John Cox of Cox Trucking; Carol Spelbos and Linda Hall of the KCS PTO for managing the money.

Bull's Bridge Golf Club for hosting a benefit golf tournament; Burr Purnell, a KCS graduate, of Oberon Creative, for the court graphics and sign art; John Casey of Housatonic Enterprises, who donated two signs; Depreter Designs for help with signs; the Region 1 Athletic Fund for $2,000 grant toward the scoreboard; George-Ann Gowan, for biographical information of her husband, Don Gowan.

The dedication of the Don Gowan Memorial Court at Kent Center School was to be held Monday.
