To the Editor:

Three-hundred and seven children from New Milford, Sherman, Kent, Roxbury, Bridgewater and Washington started school with clothing, coats, backpacks, school supplies and personal care items thanks to our community's generosity.

This is the 19th year the United Way has organized the Back-to-School (BTS) Clothes for Kids project.

There was a 22 percent increase in requests this year due to the continued difficulties families face in this economy.

It costs approximately $250 to supply a child with several outfits, a coat, shoes, and school supplies.

Many individuals and organizations helped make this year a success. We want to thank all who sponsored a child, as well as the many volunteer shoppers who helped stretch our dollars with careful planning.

We appreciate that Webster Bank generously donated office space to use for the entire month, and Kimberly-Clark Corporation provided 300 boxes used to distribute the clothing.

And without the effort of the media, we would never have met the need, as donors came forward after reading about the program.

We have already received some thank you notes from the children.

When a child writes, "Thanks for everything! I can't wait to start school! Because you cared, I am ready. Thank you," there isn't much more to be said.

On behalf of all the families we helped -- thank you.
