Roses to New Milford resident Eileen Mulvihill and former New Milford resident Karen Corcoran for serving as holiday decorating volunteers at the White House in Washington, D.C. The two longtime friends were selected in September as members of a 130-person decorating team, and they spent nearly a week right after Thanksgiving Day beautifying the home of the president and first lady. It was an unforgettable experience for Ms. Mulvihill and Ms. Corcoran, and they can feel proud they left their mark on the White House (see story and photos, Page S1 and S3).

Thorns to motorists who speed along many of our area's beautiful yet winding roads. Potential danger lurks at every corner, whether it be schoolchildren, runners, bicyclists, pets, wildlife or simply fallen branches. An example is Chestnut Land Road (Route 0109) in New Milford, where one homeowner in particular is frustrated wayward motorists have several times damaged a fence lining the property (see the letter and photo on Page S5). We implore motorists to take care and help make 2012 a safe and happy New Year for us all!

Roses to the many charitable and civic organizations and volunteers throughout the Greater New Milford area who dedicated your time and efforts to making the holiday season more special to those less fortunate. Whether it be by delivering gifts to needy children, donating to food banks, or just paying a visit to shut-ins, many of you displayed once again why our communities are such wonderful places to live.
