To the Editor:

Kudos to Whitney Troy of the Kent Land Trust for her collaborative work with the Kent Conservation Commission and the Kent Garden Club in getting this important message out.

As in Kent, many area homeowners have committed a portion of their property to pollinator friendly plantings and now our town governments need to get behind this effort. So much of the open space in our area is maintained by the town governments and, for the most part, they continue to follow the environmentally harmful practices promoted by the lawn-chemical companies.

Our concept of the perfect garden with its well-manicured lawn, and non-native plantings is in essence a battle with nature and nature is losing. The pollinators that can thrive in Connecticut need plantings that are native to the area. Without them all the wildlife higher up on the food chain will continue their alarming decline.
