To the Editor:

Co-sponsors for a flag amendment are needed.

U.S Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson from Missouri reintroduced legislation Jan. 11 before the 112th Congress proposing a constitutional amendment which would restore to Congress the power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag.

House Joint Resolution 13 simply reads: "The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States."

A companion bill in the Senate by Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah will be introduced later this month.

In previous congresses, the House overwhelmingly adopted this flag protection amendment, but we have failed to muster the necessary two-thirds majority in the Senate needed to send it to the states for ratification.

We request all concerned citizens, veterans and their families to "rally once again 'round the flag" and to please contact your senators and representatives to encourage him or her to become co-sponsors of this legislation.

To send a letter to your Congressman asking for support, and to rally around Old Glory and protect our flag, check http://capwiz.com/legion/issues/alert/?alertid=22114526.
