The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new substance, Palforzia Allergen Powder, to mitigate allergic reactions that may occur with accidental exposure to peanuts. Treatment with Palforzia may be initiated in individuals ages 4 through 17 years with a confirmed diagnosis of peanut allergy and may be continued in individuals four years of age and older.
This new treatment for peanut allergies brings the issue of other food allergies back into the spotlight. Some 160 foods have been identified as allergens. Each year, reactions to them are responsible for 30,000 emergency room visits, 2,000 hospitalizations and 150 deaths.
