flashback: mayor in training

As the 2015 mayoral race between incumbent Republican Pat Murphy and Democratic challenger David Gronbach in New Milford heats up with the weather, a quick look back at New Milford's first mayor, Stuart Halpine, is in order. The town's tradition of choosing a first selectman was ended by charter revision in time to elect longtime United States foreign service officer Stuart Halpine, a New Milford native, as the first mayor in 1987. Mayor Halpine served one term as a Democrat. He died at the age of 85 in 2010. During the halcyon days so of his youth, above, young Stuart is seen in 1932 riding the family's farm cart, drawn by Pop Eyes. Those who would like to loan or contribute a poto from any of the Greater New Milford-area towns should bring it to Norm Cummings at the Greater New Milford Spectrum office at 45B Main St. or email ncummings@newstimes.com. If the photo is to be returned, please leave a phone number and mailing address.
