NEW MILFORD — A 28-year-old woman died and her young daughter was seriously hurt in a one-car crash Monday morning, police said.

The driver, New Milford resident Stephanie Tozzi, was traveling southbound on Route 7 around 9:10 a.m. when her 2011 Nissan Sentra went off the road and struck a tree near Squash Hollow Road, Lt. Larry Ash said.

Her 4-year-old daughter was a passenger in the car and was taken to Danbury Hospital, where her condition was improved from critical to stable Monday afternoon, Ash said. On Tuesday, the girl was back home with Tozzi’s family.

Tozzi was the daughter of New Milford Police Officer Robert Tozzi. The family lives in the Gaylordsville section of town.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Route 7, also known as Kent Road in that area, was closed until about 2 p.m. Monday.

A second accident was reported in New Milford just before noon when a volunteer ambulance struck an embankment, Ash said.

The crash happened on Park Lane Road, and both the patient in the ambulance and a volunteer were hurt. Ash said their injuries were not life-threatening.
