A 19-year-old Sherman woman was extricated Monday, Jan. 27 from her car after the vehicle had crashed down an embankment and into the ice on the Housatonic River.

Michaela Smith of Hoyt Road in Sherman was traveling northbound on Kent Road (Route 7) at 7:17 p.m. when she lost control of the blue 2000 SAAB she was driving.

The vehicle smashed into a utility pole and went down the embankment, police said.

The accident occurred in the vicinity of 547 Kent Road and 4 Straits Rock Road.

Staff from the Gaylordsville Volunteer Fire Department extricated Ms. Smith from the vehicle and she was transported to Danbury Hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Kent Road was closed for several hours between routes 37 and 55 while the car was removed.

The DEEP was called for an unknown fluid that was leaking from the vehicle onto the ice on the river, police said.
