Winifred Manton, 87, had family in New Milford

Winifred Margaret Manton, 87, of Danbury, died Feb. 27, 2011, at Danbury Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Manton was born April 4, 1923.

Mrs. Manton was a parishioner of St. Peter Church since her move to Danbury in 2008.

Prior to that, she was an active member of Saint Joseph Church in Brookfield for 40 years.

She served as a eucharistic minister and participated in the liturgy study group.

Mrs. Manton was a devout member of the Legion of Mary.

She was also the driving force behind the 55 Plus Club and was always ready to volunteer whenever she was needed.

She was born in Preston Lancashire, U.K., and arrived in the United States on her birthday in 1946.

Mrs. Manton embraced her new country, becoming a citizen as soon as she was able. She never missed the opportunity to vote, regardless of the issue.

She was a member of both the Brookfield Republican Women's Group and the town's Conservation Committee.

Mrs. Manton was still active in the Catholic War Veterans Women's Auxiliary.

One of her loves was the Transatlantic Brides and Parents Association, of which she was an active member for over 60 years. She was awarded the honor of lifetime membership. She thoroughly enjoyed her last convention in Pittsburgh in 2010.

Mrs. Manton was predeceased by her husband, William Manton; her parents, John and Mary Duxbury; and a brother, William Duxbury.

She is survived by a son, John Quattrocchi; a daughter, Patricia Reiss; and a son-in-law, William Reiss, all of Danbury.

Mrs. Manton also leaves two stepchildren, William M. Manton, of Danbury, and Mary Jane Connors, of New Milford; four grandchildren, Anne-Marie Balogh, of New York City, Rob Balogh, of Danbury, Claire Rentz and her husband, Allan, of Bethel, and Deborah Kavanaugh.

Family members said she took great joy in her many great-grandchildren and always had the energy to play with them.

The Green Funeral Home of Danbury was in charge of arrangements.
