, a longtime farmer from New Milford, was the judge during the "Junior Dairy and Beef Show," held in the south ring Saturday morning during the annual Bridgewater Country Fair.
Dozens of youngsters presented their cows to Harris, who looked them over calmly then walked over to a microphone to make comments and award ribbons.
It was like the Westminster Dog Show with
"She shows a little wear and tear in the utter but she's been using it a lot," Harris said of a 10-year-old cow who was named a reserve grand champion during the show.
Harris was especially fond of a year-old calf named Carolina, owned by 8-year-old
Zachary and Carolina, in their first competition ever, took home a slew of ribbons, including "breed champion."
After receiving his ribbon, little blond-haired Zachary had to shake about a dozen hands before reaching his mom,
, sitting in the bleachers.
"He was just happy to have a ribbon," his mother said, smiling.
If cow competitions don't do it for you, don't worry. The Bridgewater Fair has a little of everything, from the quaint to the sort of crazy.
There are rides galore, chainsaw demonstrations and an eye-popping trampoline show courtesy of the acrobats from Flippen Out Productions.
Six-year Liam Henderson of Brookfield was fascinated by the dozens of chickens under the poultry tent.
"I like the ducks and those chickens. They peek out their heads," he said.
Liam was there with his mom,
, his dad, Sean, along with siblings
, Connor and Kate.
said he moved his family to Brookfield in 2003. They have tried to make the Bridgewater Country Fair each year. Henderson said he grew up in California, so the fair's rural vibe made him feel nostalgic.
"I'm out from out west originally, so I love this," Henderson said.
