The face of Bridge Street has evolved over the years. Today the 31 Bridge St. building at the corner of Bridge and West streets is home to numerous businesses. But years ago, the building was home to the Merritt Beach store, above. It was located along the then-unpaved Bridge Street, with the railroad tracks to the east and West Street to the west. The store was one of New Milford’s centers of commerce during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A sign hanging over the front steps advertised lumber and hardware.
