Way Back When

The majority of us probably give very little thought to the roads we drive on and the bridges we drive across. But Lindsey Chatfield of New Milford gives much thought to bridges, especially the one he helped build in town. In this photo by Jack Muckstadt, published in The Advertiser in 1983, Chatfield, right, then an employee with the New Milford Public Works Department, uses an earth packing machine to pack the fill behind the new abutment on the Sand Road Bridge. Chatfield said the bridge is the first bridge in town constructed by the town’s highway department. The crew consisted of highway supervisor Eric Carlson, and crew members Henry Miller, Fran Oviatt, Kip Pennywell, Wayne Rodgers, Fred Ploof and Chatfield. The bridge was completed in the fall of 1983. Chatfield, who is joined in the photo by Miller, left, and Rodgers, said he would like to see the bridge preserved and listed as an historical element in town, as it was the first bridge constructed in town by town employees. lessThe majority of us probably give very little thought to the roads we drive on and the bridges we drive across. The majority of us probably give very little thought to the roads we drive on and the bridges we drive across. But Lindsey Chatfield, of New Milford, gives much thought to bridges, especially the one he helped build in town. In the above photo by Jack Muckstadt, published in The Advertiser in 1983, Chatfield, right, then an employee with the New Milford Public Works Department, uses an earth- packing machine to pack the fill behind the new abutment on the Sand Road Bridge. The bridge was completed in the fall of 1983 and some work has been done to it over the years. Chatfield said he would like to see the bridge preserved and listed as an historical element in town.
