Tom and Joyce Ward celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary June 22.

Family and friends shared the occasion with the Wards during a party at the Odd Fellows Hall Palm Rebekah Lodge, where they have been members for 56 years, on Danbury Road (Route 7 South).

Hosting the event were the Wards' sons, Jim Ward of Washington, William Ward of Sherman and Tracey Ward of New Milford, and friends Warren and Bonnie Smith.

Tom Ward was born in his parents' back bedroom of their River View Court home and Joyce was born in New Milford Hospital.

The couple met when Joyce was horseback riding and Tom happened by in his new 1946 Ford convertible.

Joyce attended New Miford High School, where she played field hockey, basketball and softball, while Tom enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. They kept in touch by letter, and, when Tom came home for leave, they were married June 27, 1953, at the First Congregational Church in New Milford.

Residents for 37 years of the Merryall district of New Mllford, the couple has shared season tickets to New York Giants football games since 1980.

The Wards have five children -- Winnie, Jay, Jim, William and Tracey, 10 grandchildren, all born in New Milford, and 10 great-grandchildren.
