The Walk for the Community Fuel Bank will be held Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. in New Milford.
The 5-kilometer walk around the village center will raise money for the fuel bank. It will start at the Richmond Citizen Center at 40 Main St. Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the dining room of the center.
Several local fuel and other companies have sponsored the event. Major sponsors include ABC Fuel, Norbert Mitchell and Co. and Marandola Fuel Service. Leahy's Fuels, Eastern Connector Specialty Corp., Superior Plus Energy Services, and Petro Oil have also been past supporters.
Last year, almost 800 New Milford resident households were assisted with federal, state and local heating assistance totaling $485,000 in combined benefits.
That translates into a cut of 43 percent from previous winters when federal funds to this program were higher.
Last year, the Community Fuel Bank helped to heat more than 100 New Milford homes.
Walkers can make a minimum donation of $10 to participate. All donations should be returned at registration. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.
