Steep Rock Association in Washington is recruiting volunteers to help with the pilot year of an annual macroinvertebrate sampling effort Sept. 16.

The event will run from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Steep Rock Preserve, 2 Tunnel Road.

Volunteers will identify and count the bugs that spend part of their life developing under water.

SRA program leader Rory Larson will begin the program with a brief introductory training session at the main Steep Rock Preserve parking lot adjacent to the riding ring.

Protocol, equipment, and identification keys used for this research will be covered.

Immediately following the training, volunteers will sample a nearby reach of the Shepaug River and record the findings.

Participants should bring appropriate footwear for wading in water, such as sandals, sneakers, waders, or boots.

All ages are welcome.
