Volunteer Center seeks donors
For 17 years, the Volunteer Center has given needy students a backpack, school supplies and a $100 Sears gift certificate to buy clothes.
This year there is an increase in demand for the program but lower than usual donations.
Patti Cohen-Hecht, the center's executive director, said it is stocked with school supplies but in dire need of people or businesses willing to donate backpacks and gift certificates.
The program relies on the Danbury school system and area social service agencies to identify children who need the goods. Due to the weakened economy, there was a larger than normal list this year.
Meanwhile, area businesses have cut back on donations -- also due to the weakened economy.
While the Volunteer Center will be able to outfit 345 students, there is a waiting list of about 75 students that Cohen-Hecht isn't sure her group can help.
With a program distribution date of Aug. 20, the Volunteer Center is unable to add more students to the waiting list.
