Violet Pauline (Sterry) Swanson, 78, of Baldwin Hill Road, New Preston, died June 14, 2010.

Mrs. Swanson was born Nov. 24, 1931, in New Milford, daughter of the late Lewis and Alice (Edeen) Sterry, of South Kent.

She worked at the New York Foundling Hospital, Sharon and New Milford hospitals, the Devereux-Glenhome School in Washington and Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center in New Milford.

She was the administrator of Ye Olde Rest Home in New Milford for 20 years.

After retirement she worked part time at Morning Star Retirement Home, Kent.

Mrs. Swanson devoted her life to taking care of others. She was a foster parent to many children.

She loved to cook, bake, and knit. She was an avid animal and nature lover. She loved sports and horse racing.

Mrs. Swanson is survived by a son, Lawrence Swanson, of New Preston; four daughters, Annabelle Swanson, of West Hartford, Betsy Swanson, of Canaan, Susan Stirnweiss, of Wassiac, N.Y., and Marjorie Williams, of Cheshire; three brothers, Dean Sterry, of Ohio, Roger Sterry, of Florida, and Johnny Sterry. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, George and Lawrence, and her ex-husband, Allyn Swanson.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 p.m. at the Kent Congregational Church on Main Street in Kent.
