WATERBURY -- The state fire marshal's office has ordered a Waterbury movie theater shut down because of fire safety training issues, but officials say moviegoers were never in danger.

Operators of the Regal Cinemas at the Brass Mill Center mall were told Friday to close the theater until the problems are addressed. It's been operating without a license for more than a year, because of difficulties passing a city safety inspection.

Fire Marshal Chet Bennett says the theater could not provide evidence that employees received required fire drill training. The cinema must pass the city's inspection before it can renew its state licenses.

Bennett says the sprinkler and alarm systems are working fine.

Officials at theater owner Regal Entertainment Group didn't return calls.
