There is 'great generosity' in the community

To the Editor:

The New Milford Social Services Department has borne witness to great generosity bestowed upon others within our community.

We have had the privilege of extending giving hands to those in New Milford who rely upon us to help them through both Thanksgiving and the December holidays.

Spearheaded by the Greater New Milford Women’s Club and Western Connecticut United Way, plus the Easley family and Coldwell Banker Real Estate, our community provided a bounty of food to 1,020 neighbors in need at Thanksgiving. Bravo!

In December, the greater New Milford community made sure that the young and the young at heart had reason to celebrate.

Our sibling shopping spree enabled over 240 kids to choose gifts for their brothers and sisters.

The Santa Fund and Gift Room provided gifts and clothing for 490 local kids. Sixty-five disabled adults were also given small presents with gift certificates.

This Herculean task could not be accomplished without the help of many community members: local businesses, churches, civic groups, schools, neighborhoods, other town employees and many a kind individual or family.

It truly takes a village, and the village responded!

All of this would not have occurred without the help of our amazing Social Services volunteers, with special mention to Terri Gatten.

Kudos as well to our Santa Scott Earle, Jason O’Connor as Santa Fund donor coordinator and the “night crew” of elves: Carol, Maryann, Alice, Debbie and Ella.

The NMHS French Honor Society was awesome as always with their “Star Project” for new winter boots.

We appreciate Carlson Therapy helping us via the Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign, the Odd Fellows Hall and our New Milford Police Department for their terrific toy drives.

In addition, certain private individuals who truly gave from their hearts made a very special difference this year.

Helping friends, while we wish we could name each and every one of you, we also know that is not the point.

To be sure, your gifts have been received and passed on, and you have made our small world a better place! Many donations have been received for the food bank and our emergency funds. Knowing that human need does not take a holiday, we appreciate each and every gift.
