Theodore R. Adams, 78, of New Milford, passed away Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at New Milford Hospital, after a long, intermittent illness.

Mr. Adams was born May 17, 1933 in New Milford, son of the late Edward Raymond and Mary Worden Beckwith Adams.

He was a graduate of New Milford High School, the University of New Haven and the FBI National Academy, and served in the U.S. Navy as a submariner during the Korean War.

Mr. Adams was police chief in New Milford for 11 years, retiring in 1984.

After serving as a Connecticut state trooper, he had joined the New Milford Police Department in 1962, one of only four officers at that time.

Mr. Adams worked as a supervisory patrolman until 1969 when he was promoted to sergeant. By 1971, he had been promoted to lieutenant and was made chief in 1973. He served in that capacity until his retirement in December 1984.

He is survived by a son, Theodore R. Adams, Jr. of New Preston; a brother, Duey Adams, and his wife Sally of New Milford; a sister, Barbara Chappuis of New Milford; and three grandchildren, Theodore R. Adams III, Cassandra N. Adams and Brandon Archibald; an aunt, Franny Bucinsley; a niece, Sharon Chappuis; and four nephews, Steve, Tom, Chris and Dan Adams.

He is also survived by his longtime friend and companion, Phyllis Scanlan, and her children, Brian and Sean Scanlan and Jennifer Mullen.

Friends may call at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford, Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 from 4 to 8 p.m., with a funeral service at 7:30 p.m.
