The New Milford TRIAD's SALT Council will sponsor two events -- one only for seniors and another open to the public -- in coming weeks.

A shredding day for seniors will be held May 16 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the New Milford Senior Center, located at 40 Main St.

New Milford seniors only are invited to bring old documents to be shredded by Secure Eco-Shred.

As demonstrated at the state TRIAD spring meeting, a talk was given by an FBI agent showing how easy it is for someone to approach a senior citizen they never met, strike up a conversation and, before you know it, you have given them enough information to start the theft of your identity.

Ways to help combat identity theft include shredding or burning documents that contain personal information, including canceled checks and any left over checks and deposit slips.

The best defense to counter identity theft is the shredding of any information that contains one's name address, phone number or any other personal information.

TRIAD members will carry the box from seniors' cars to the Eco-Shred truck.

Drug Take Back Day will tentatively be held June 2 at The Maxx on Railroad Street.

Residents will have the opportunity to dispose of unwanted and expired medication.
