Ten New Milford students recently won awards in the fifth annual Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority's recycling poster contest.

Youths from 11 school districts were invited to design and posters to the theme "Reuse, Renew and Recycle."

More than 2,000 entries were received.

Entries were judged on the town level and then submitted for judging on the regional level.

The grand prize regional winner was New Milford High School senior Annie Mao, who won a $250 prize and has her poster on display on two large billboards along Route 7 in New Milford.

The HRRA regional winners for New Milford were seventh-grader Sophia Rago, sophomore Samantha Shaw and junior Ashley Lian.

Also honored were kindergartener Emily Robitaille (honorable mention); first-grader Lindsay Kessman (third place); second-grader Sarah Vial (honorable mention); fifth-grader Renzo Gazzolo (third place); sixth-grader Sara Grudzwick (third place); and eighth-grader Zachary Pitcher (honorable mention).

The awards ceremony was held recently at the Union Savings Bank on North Street in Danbury, one of the contributing sponsors of the contest.
