State tournament eludes Green Wave boys' quintet

Coach Luchsinger and Co. post 5-15 ledger

The New Milford High School boys' basketball team has been a frequent participant in the state class "LL" boys' basketball team.

Coach Jim Luchsinger's Green Wave has typically earned the eight or more wins requisite for qualification for the CIAC's post-season hardcourt competition.

Somewhere along the way this winter, however, the 2010-11 edition somehow lost its way after a 3-2 start.

The Green Wave lost games last week to Masuk, 72-65, and Newtown, 65-48, to lower the curtain on a 5-15 season.

After beating visiting Rockville, 67-48, Dec. 30, coach Luchsinger's hardcourt crew was able to muster just two more victories: 70-61 over Weston Feb. 4 and 83-53 over Oxford Feb. 12.

Among the highlights of the campaign was the scoring touch of senior wingman Steven Cronin, especially down the stretch. His performances peaked the final week as he netted 25 in 72-65 defeat Feb. 21 to Masuk and 24 more during a 65-48 loss Feb. 23 to Newtown.

The team reached an offensive peak Feb. 12 at home as it ripped struggling Oxford. A balanced lineup was led by Steven Cronin with 14 points, Derik Brady with 13, Teddy Augeri with 11, Mike Phillips with 10, Dylan Harris with nine and Nick Moglia with eight.

Seniors who have played their final basketball games in a Green Wave uniform are Derik Brady, Steven Cronin, Luke Stolz and Zach Vasnick.
