A strong state tournament performance in defeat closed the book Nov. 10 on the Shepaug Valley High School field hockey campaign.

Coaches Jaye Stuart and Sarah Lipinsky's 13th-ranked Spartans made the trek cross-state to Haddam for a first-round state class 'S' tournament match and came home on the short end of a 1-0 count to fourth-ranked Haddam-Killingworth.

The Region 12 girls had qualified for state competition courtesy of their 5-8-1 regular-season record in Berkshire League play.

Among the high points for the Spartans was a sweep of Housatonic Valley Regional by scores of 3-0 and 6-1, as well as wins over Thomaston, Wamogo and Litchfield by respective scores of 3-1, 2-0 and 2-1.

Losses by 1-0 scores in overtime to Northwestern and Wamogo hurt Shepaug's chances for a winning record.

The season's close marked the Spartan career end for seniors Ally Bierce, Jackie Brown, Nicole Deanne, Kathryn Droessler, Zoe Klavana, Kara Linder, Hannah Loeb, Megan Piersall, Aimee Reutzel, Ashlee Smith, Stacey Sullivan, Mariah Walsh and Megan Woodruff.
