Smith in line to be New Milford Superintendent of Schools

NEW MILFORD — Interim-Superintendent of Schools Joshua Smith is in negotiations with the New Milford Board of Education on a contract to become the district’s Superintendent.

Smith has served as interim-superintendent since January 31 when long time Superintendent of Schools JeanAnn Paddyfote retired. He was previously deputy superintendent of schools.

Smith came to the district in 2012 as assistant superintendent of schools. In July 2015, his title was changed to deputy superintendent. He previously serve as director of information in the Ridgefield Public Schools for five years and from 2000 to 2007 he worked for Area Cooperative Education Services. He was an eighth grade United States Government and Economics teacher at Schaghticoke Middle School in New Milford from 1997 to 2000.

Smith presented his first budget proposal to the Board of Education in January. The $62.5 million budget proposal for 2016-17 was presented to the joint budget meeting of the Town Council and Board of Finance by Smith and Board of Education Chairman David Lawson March 3. The proposal’s 2.3 percent or $1.4 million increase over the present year received a positive response.
