SHERMAN — Those responsible for maintaining, enhancing and developing local roadways and town-owned properties were Sherman’s highest paid municipal employees of 2020.

With an income of about $104,225, public works director Don Borkowski was the town’s top-earning employee of 2020. As a result of working more than 40 hours some weeks, about $18,300 of his earnings were in overtime pay.

The town’s business administrator, Liz LaVia, said the overtime paid to public works employees is “based on winter storm averages.”

Sherman’s second-highest paid employee of 2020 was the public works department’s mechanic, Cliff Palmer, who earned $72,490 last year — $5,327 of which was in overtime pay.

Looking at base salary alone, First Selectman Don Lowe — who earned $61,800 in 2020 — would be the third highest paid town employee, but overtime paid to public works crew members bumped him down to fourth place.

The town’s three public works crew members earned $62,118 last year, and about $4,565 of their pay was in overtime.

Other than Borkowski, Palmer and the public works crew, no one else on the top 10 list of highest paid town employees in Sherman earned overtime pay in 2020.

The fifth highest paid town employee was town clerk Carol Evans, who worked 24 hours a week and earned $54,807 last year.

The senior center’s administrative coordinator, Suzette Berger, made $45,599 in 2020, earning her a sixth-place spot on the top 10 highest earners list. According to LaVia, Berger worked 30 hours a week.

The seventh and eighth highest paid town employees were tax collector Tabitha Fazzone and administrative assistant Ruth Byrnes, who made $45,102 and $42,482, respectively, last year and each worked 24 hours a week.

With a salary of $39,000, social services director Lynne Gomez took the ninth-place spot. She worked about 25 hours per week.

Sherman’s 10th highest paid employee was health director Tim Simpkins, who worked about 12 hours a week and earned $36,053 in 2020. Simpkins also serves as health director of the neighboring town of New Fairfield, where he made about $136,231 last year.
