Sherman native and UCONN student Zach Vasnick won a gold medal at the 2015 U.S. Parachute Association National Collegiate Parachuting Championship.

Vasnick won last week in the sport accuracy competition at the Florida Skydiving Center in Lake Wales. The competition drew more than 100 collegiate skydivers from around the country to compete for the national champion in four skydiving disciplines: formation skydiving; vertical formation skydiving; and sports accuracy and classic accuracy.

Vasnick’s win required landing his parachute as close as possible to a traget while flying across the ground at high speeds.

Vasnick is a senior accounting major at the University of Connecticut. He has completed more than 350 skydives. He and his teammates train at Connecticut Parachutists Inc. in Ellington.
